3G (3rd Generation) OPS PantsPurchase from Authorized Dealer
A decade of the Global War on Terrorism and 3 generations of development bring us to what many seasoned professionals believe is the best design in combat trousers to come on a very long time.
Some of the comments we have heard include: “Now I can have state of the art pants without looking like an extra from a commando video game”
“Where the waist sits on me is perfect! I don’t look like a plumber in camo!”
A lot of changes were made from our 2nd to 3rd Generation Ops Pants.
First, we tweaked the cargo pocket placement. We moved them ever so slightly to the front of the leg. We did this to provide the wearer with a little more side to side leg room while sitting in tight APC’s and helicopters. We were however, careful enough not to move them so far to the front of the leg that they would be annoying when prone.
Here is a close up of the calf pocket. Some things to note: the flap is two layers thick, for durability. All potential stress points are bar tacked. Also note how well it fits the party favors! A true professional trouser.
This kind of fine tuning can only come from user feedback…
But pocket re-design did not stop with pocket placement. No, no, no! We tweaked the top flap design to make it easier to access. Based on user feedback… it is a success! One user even went on to recommend we use this closure on all our clothing pockets!
Another user mused that it would be good to access the cargo pockets from a kneeling or sitting position.
Hmmm…an interesting thought. We brought this idea to our designers, with one caveat, you had to be able to access the cargo pocket from the top or side, using only one button, no zippers and now hook and loop.
“Impossible!” they protested!
“Do it!” the boss ordered.
Retrieving a map from the "Up-n-Over" Cargo Pocket. A perfect solution, especially when standing up to get into your cargo pocket will get your head blown off.
And they did it! A cargo pocket you can access from the top or the side. The secret is a unique Up-n-Over™ pleat. Will you loose things from this pocket? The short answer is yes if they are pocket knives, coins, or pens. No, if you are using it, as cargo pockets are intended, for things like maps, gloves, balaclavas etc. In fact during the design phase many Drop Zone staffers carried their wallets in the cargo pocket.
Not a wallet has been lost!
As an added bonus, we borrowed the “hidden” folding knife pocket from our proven, Better BDU Pant and incorporated it into the 3G-OPS Pant’s cargo pockets. Yes, that’s right, both cargo pockets can carry hidden folding knives.
Pocket details abound. On the rear seat pockets, double flaps are provided, hiding the button closures and helping to prevent snagging of the buttons.
But wait. There’s more! We’ve added a hidden “back up pocket pistol” pocket to the right front interior. This feature brings a new meaning to the famous Mae West line: Is that a gun in your pocket or are you excited to see me?
The front slash pockets are, as per our SOP, lined with the same fabric the rest of the pant is made of, providing exceptional durability. At last, no more coins dropping into your boots. The slash pockets are deep, adding a bit more security to items that are “slipped” into the pocket during the “heat of the moment”.
Knee pad pockets are all the rage. At Drop Zone we tried external kneepad pockets on our 1st Gen Ops Pants. It worked, but not well. The opening had a tendency to snag and tear when crawling. On our Gen 2 Ops Pant we tried an internal knee pad pocket. Fail! Although it did not have the snagging and tearing issues, one had to take the trousers off to fit the pad. Not convenient at all.
Worse yet, in both, the legs had a propensity to twist and shift laterally, making landing on the kneepad a hit or miss affair. The other issue was foam. If tried to use thick high density foam for adequate protection, it felt weird, as though you had soft boards in your pants. When we tried light foam that conformed to the knee shape better, protection was greatly reduced.
The solution our designers came up with was external knee pads with straps.
“That’s no solution!” You say. And you’re right. But external kneepads do indeed protect the knees and your expensive tactical pants so well. You also have the option of selecting from various brands of external kneepads, to suit your needs and mission.
“Right to all.” You say, “but when I run, they slip down to my ankle!”
But that’s where our designers have solved the problem. They have provided a series of kneepad strap tunnels on the back of the leg. You just run your upper strap through the appropriate tunnel for your leg length and fix it to the kneepad. No more slippage. The kneepad stays in place!
So dog gone flippin’ simple we can’t believe no one else has done it!
We tested the pants extensively and the testers raved about the kneepad strap tunnels. In fact, one tester even runs his sub-load leg strap through one of the tunnels that is not occupied by the knee strap. No more sub-load slippage! Bonus!
Like our now famous Better BDU Pant, the OPS Pant boasts a double butt and double knees for extended durability. Large 2”/ 52-57mm belt loops are provided to make room for the heaviest of the reinforced “riggers belts” so popular with the professional operators today. But not content to leave the belt loops alone, our designers terminated the bottom of the belt loop with an additional loop, properly sized for a mini carabiner. Perfect for lanyards.
With performance and durability being the watchwords at Drop Zone no detail is left untouched. All high stress points are bar tacked to prevent tear out. The buttons are the famous Canadian Army “taped” buttons to eliminate loss.
Even the fly does not escape the obsessive ness of our designers being finished with a Ykk® zipper for smooth, malfunction free action. After all when a man’s gotta go he’s gotta go!
